Abstract

The use of learning management systems (LMSs) in higher education institutions is a significant way to enhance teaching and learning, particularly in an online environment. Many universities used learning management systems prior to the covid-19 pandemic. This chapter reports on a study of the intentions of using a Learning Management System (LMS) at a university of technology prior to COVID-19, as well as a comparative discussion of online learning using LMS in the post-COVID-19 era. The study, based on the literature and the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model, examined four constructs that influence academics’ usage and behavior to adopt LMS: performance expectancy, effort expectancy, facilitating conditions, and social influence. Data from a survey questionnaire was collected from one hundred academics. Correlations and regression were performed to analyse the relationships among the constructs. The set of constructs including performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitation conditions were identified as influential factors in the usage of LMS. However, the results of the study indicate that facilitating conditions play a significant role in determining the usage of and intention to use LMSs among both users and non- users. Thus, providing an appropriate environment and resources for the effective use of LMS is essential to ensure its successful adoption. The findings of this research have implications for practice. As the world adapts to the new normal of teaching and learning post covid-19, these implications are particularly relevant.
