Abstract

This topic is used in subsurface site investigations to distinguish the different soil formations, with a focus on the swelling characteristics of clays. The information was entered into a geographic information system (GIS) with interactive maps. These maps have been used to recognise the swelling potential in various locations throughout Puducherry, as well as the study of identified damages in the form of cracks. When using computer techniques, efficiency is extremely high. In situ and compacted samples are used to evaluate the engineering properties of an expansive soil. The Swelling potential of the expansive soil mainly depends upon the properties of soil and environmental factors and Stress Conditions. The goal of this topic is to discuss the factors that influence swelling behavior and the associated damage in low-rise buildings. The allowable and predicted damage in residential buildings is described in terms of engineering properties and related damage. The presence of high plastic clay indicates the presence of expansion soil problems. Expansive soils all over the world cause serious issues on civil engineering structures, resulting in lakhs of money being spent to repair the damage problems associated with the buildings. Soil properties mapped in this study which influence the damage potential of the engineering structures are clay mineralogy, liquid limit, plastic limit and initial water content, plasticity index, dry density. Environmental parameters, beginning moisture content, climate, ground water drainage conditions, vegetation, and the soil profile of the study's clay soil are all recorded in the database. So it will be helpful for the general public to be aware of this soil characteristic in order to correctly select the right type of foundation and the appropriate time to advance the phases of construction.
